September Athlete of The Month!

Congratulations to Jessica Cato Zachos, September Athlete of The Month! Let’s get to know Jessica a little better with some questions below.

What’s a day in the life of Jessica Cato Zachos? Let’s get some details.

I just recently stopped working full-time at the end of the summer, and that’s taken some adjusting.  Usually I get up at 6:30 am to walk Rosie, our lab mix puppy. Eat a small meal. Get our daughter up and ready for school, send her on the bus and go to CrossFit!  A few days a week, I drive to the barn in Groton where I board a horse to gallop around the fields, take a lesson, or jump some fences. Go to dog training class, meet my sister in law and go for a hike with 10 dogs.  Every now and again, I do lectures on anesthesia monitoring on small animals at different veterinary practices, and I still pick up a few shifts at my old job to help out. Every day is different, and I’m just as busy as I was working a full time job!

What is your biggest accomplishment since joining CFS?

I think reaching out to Mick back in April when I needed some guidance with nutrition. He gave me Kate Brierley’s info, and 6 months later with a lot of hard work losing 30 lbs.  I’ve since been able to jump a 20″ box and to be able climb a rope.

What kind of stuffed animal did you have growing up?  

I don’t remember any stuffed animals because I grew up in a house full of live animals. At one point we had nine cats, two love birds, two ferrets, one Cocker spaniel and a huge fish tank!  No need for stuffed animals when you have all those pets. 🙂

What is your favorite ride at the amusement park?  

I love roller coasters!!! The bigger the better. I’m a little bit of a thrill seeker! I love going fast and the wind rushing in my face!

What is your advice to new folks?  

Everyone says…just showing up!  It’s half the battle, but also allowing yourself to fail and not beat yourself up for it. Find the right class time that works for your schedule. Be proud of what you did accomplish in class that day. If you want added resources, just ask a coach, they will steer you in the right direction.

When did you join Synergistics, and tell us what that first class/experience was like?

I joined Synergistics in February of 2015, My first class, I don’t remember a lot, just that I did the WOD with Deb, and she was super nice.  The second class, I really remember because it was a 4:30pm class and there were something like 20 or more people there, and I was feeling super overwhelmed.  Jono saw me and was nice enough  tell me it was going to be Okay and that I can do this.  I soon figured out that the earlier classes had less people and that just worked better for me.

What is your favorite CrossFit movement?

This is tough…. I think I like deadlifts the best!  I actually look forward to doing them versus feeling like I’m not that great at them.

What is something most people would not know about you?  

I LOVE horses and wanted to be a horse trainer when I was a kid. I’m now a proud horse mom of Daisysgonnamakeit, a retired thoroughbred I adopted through a great program in Kentucky. She was actually a motivation to start CrossFit as I wanted to be a better, stronger rider. I do talk about Daisy a lot, so maybe this isn’t that unknown!  Something a little more obscure, I played four years of Division I rugby as a tight head prop at UMass-Amherst.
