Congratulations to Dawn Barnes, February’s Athlete of The Month! Let’s get to know Dawn a little better with some questions below.
When and how did you get started with us?
I started at CFS in May 2016. Our oldest son, Isaiah (14), actually started first and I joined about a year later.
What is your biggest accomplishment since joining CFS?
This is a tough question because I’ve had so many! If I had to choose one it would probably be pull ups. I considered myself to be in pretty good shape before starting CrossFit, but in all my life I’ve never been able to do pull ups ….until now. At present, I can do 3 unbroken strict pull ups and more than 10 unbroken kipping pull ups. Now I love seeing them in a work out!
What is your advice to new folks?
1) Don’t be intimidated by what everyone else is doing. CrossFit is a process and a journey. Keep track of your workouts and celebrate your progress — “Progress is progress no matter how small.” 2) Be committed. What you get out of it is directly proportionate to the effort you put into it. 3) Proper nutrition is key. If you want optimal results, you need to fuel your body appropriately.
What is your favorite CrossFit workout?
I don’t really have a favorite workout yet, but I like anything metcon.
What is your favorite meal?
What is your favorite hobby?
I love photography
What is something most people would not know about you?
Here are a few: I was born and raised in Indiana (a country girl at heart). We lived in Stockholm, Sweden for a few years while my husband was completing his PhD. I enjoy archery (deer hunting). And I was overweight as a kid (I have pictures to prove it!)
What is your favorite movie of all time?
Seriously, how do I pick just one? I love sports and a good underdog story — So, I’d probably have to say Hoosiers. Or Rocky IV. (“Eye of the Tiger” is one of my go-to songs when I’m working out or running and need an energy boost.) I also enjoy military and superhero movies.
What is your dream vacation spot?
Going on a safari in South Africa
Thanks for sharing Dawn!
