CrossFit Kids & Teens

KIDS:

  • CrossFit Kids Elementary (ages 8-12 yrs old/grades 2-5) 

TEENS (Middle School & High School):

  • CrossFit Middle School (ages 11-13 yrs old/grades 6-8) 
  • CrossFit High School (ages 14-17 yrs old/grades 9-12) 

NOTE: The difference of the two classes involving overlap of ages is explained below in Graduation within the Program”

We combine gymnastics, body weight calisthenics, and weightlifting elements to develop capacity across ten general physical skills.  Additional elements that encourage bone density development, cross body movements and exercises that involve the vestibular system are also incorporated.  The elements are combined to keep children engaged and entertained, while teaching them proper movement technique and creating a broad athletic foundation. Nutrition is also discussed as the basis of athletic performance and health within a supportive community.  Classes include a warmup, skill work, a workout, and an exercise intensive game.

FOUNDATIONS (optional) for CrossFit Middle School & CrossFit High School:  Athletes may enter directly into workouts or choose to complete Teens Foundations: $99.00 for one 2 hour session. You must pay in advance by calling to register.  Once you have registered we will be expecting to see you at your scheduled class. Class size is limited to 3 athletes per coach and can sell out in advance.  

This one session program introduces new athletes to CrossFit. We invite you to the challenging and rewarding experience.  Before ramping up to the intensity of the regular CrossFit Synergistics Group Training beginning athlete have the option to complete FOUNDATIONS to become comfortable and safe with the basic technique in skills and movements that merge CrossFit.  Included is an outline of nutrition and CrossFit philosophy to help reach your wellness goals.

Program Description
CrossFit Kids  & Teens (CFKT) combines gymnastics, body weight calisthenics, and weightlifting elements to develop capacity across ten general physical skills: cardio-respiratory endurance, power, strength, stamina, speed, agility, flexibility, balance, accuracy, and coordination. Additional elements that encourage bone density development, cross body movements and exercises that involve the vestibular system are also incorporated. Children and teens have a greater opportunity (relative to adults) to maximize their physical skills when exposed to this stimulus during years of peak development. The elements are combined to keep children engaged and entertained, while teaching them proper movement technique and creating a broad athletic foundation. Nutrition is also discussed as the basis of athletic performance and health within a supportive community. For CFKT, it is imperative to pair fitness and fun, to create a lifelong love of health and fitness for our children. CFKT is an evolving program, where new concepts are investigated, implemented and evaluated. CFKT is a progressive program offering classes for Kids & Teens: Elementary (ages 8-12 yrs old/ grades 2-6), Middle School (ages 11-13 yrs old/ grades 6-8)  & CrossFit High School (ages 14-17 yrs old/ grades 9-12).  Following this, teenagers matriculate into adult CrossFit classes. The class structure across the age groups is generally the same. Kids classes include a warmup, skill work, a workout, and an exercise intensive game. Teen classes are similar, but reccomends post workout study. Research has found there is optimal learning capacity of the brain for 20-40 minutes after exercise.

Expectations and Parental Support
If your child has a sport practice schedule, please speak with a trainer to evaluate their schedule. We recommend CF be maintained even during sport season.
Please bring or purchase water, so that your children can stay well hydrated. Provide layered clothing for changes in temperature, and athletic shoes (flat converse style are preferred). Shoes must be tied normally. Jewelry, belts, etc. should be minimal.  Speak with the trainer to let them know how they may best provide care for your child. Especially let them know if there are any special needs or medications. Changes in health status should also be discussed.

Graduation within the Program
Trainers will determine when children are ready to move from one program to the next. This will differ for each child; the age recommendations for each program are just that. When a child is ready to move onto the next class the trainer will advise the parents; and the child may attend the new class.  Many children excel in one area but not in another. Graduation is at our discretion, and we attempt to place all children in the appropriate class.

There are three primary elements that are evaluated:

  • physical capacity,
  • behavioral safety and ability to follow directions
  • physical safety and ability to control movements

Additional factors include, the habit of having a logbook with data at all workouts to ensure safe choices of movement and load, specific and measurable goals that are written and articulated, the ability to make safe choices and scales despite the unavoidable competitive nature of group fitness, frequency and consistency of attendance and in some cases, physical size can be a factor.
