Dr. Frey received her B.A. with honors from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee and her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from MGH Institute of Health Professionals in Charlestown, Massachusetts. Her year-long internship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital included both outpatient and inpatient orthopedic rotations where she gained invaluable experience treating patients with diverse musculoskeletal conditions. After graduation Dr. Frey joined Brigham and Women’s outpatient clinic in Chestnut Hill where she continues to expand her practice in orthopedics and vestibular rehabilitation. She currently treats a wide variety of patients with musculoskeletal and vestibular concerns, and loves helping patients return to an active lifestyle.

What does a physical therapy evaluation and treatment session involve?
We will talk about your musculoskeletal concerns your movement patterns, range of motion, muscle strength, and coordination. There are multiple treatment options available including, but not limited to, soft tissue mobilization/massage, joint mobilizations and manipulations, stretching, corrective exercise programming, dry needling/intramuscular trigger point therapy, and education all directed to helping you feel better and return to action.
What is dry needling?
Dry needling, or Intramuscular Trigger Point Therapy (IMTPT), is a manual physical therapy approach using monofilament needles (not hollow) to penetrate through the skin, and stimulate the trigger points in muscles and connective tissue. No medication is used. If indicated, electrical stimulation can be passed through the needles to promote muscle healing and reduce pain.
How does dry needling work?
IMTPT works by three main mechanisms:
First, the introduction of the needle into muscle tissues helps to reset the neuromuscular junction to relax chronic, tight bands of muscle tissue called trigger points. IMTPT is a highly targeted, localized approach to muscle tension.
Second, the placement of an IMTPT needle in an area of chronic musculoskeletal inflammation helps restart the body’s natural healing response. Sometimes, in the process of repairing tissue, our immune systems are unable to fully repair after musculoskeletal stress, leading to chronic injuries. IMTPT restarts the healing response at a specific area to promote repair of stressed tissues.
Third, IMTPT causes the release of endogenous opioids to decrease musculoskeletal pain. As your body’s natural pain killers are released normal movement patterns return, causing fewer compensations and decreased stress to surrounding muscles and joints.
